Did you know that Earth Day in Tucson is just around the corner? If you can’t get out and volunteer in Tucson this Earth Day, fear not. We’re bringing you a list of five things you can do at home that will make a big impact on the earth and your footprint here.
Earth Day In Tucson: How To Be More Eco Friendly This Earth Day!
Not all of the opportunities to volunteer in Tucson for Earth Day are going to be possible with everything going on in the world right now. Instead of going out or gathering for Earth Day 2020, let’s take some steps at home to change our own routines. We can make a big impact on the world with just our small actions at home and in our daily routines.
Cut Out Single Use Plastics
It might seem tough but it’s really not. If you have a canvas tote bag and a travel mug you can cut out a lot of your single use plastics in one fell swoop! Plastic shopping bags, disposable cups, and straws make up a huge portion of the plastic pollution on the planet. Cutting these items out of even one household is a HUGE difference! It keeps those plastics from needing to be made which consumes fuel and produces carbon emissions but it also helps keep them from ending up in a landfill or the ocean when they can’t be properly recycled!
Ditch The Junk Mail
Call the people sending you those magazines and flyers. They would rather save on postage than send you something you definitely won’t even look at. Call them and tell them you are creating a paper free household and you’d like to be removed from their mailing list!
You can do the same with bills by going paperless. It saves on fuel emissions and usage for delivery and creation and it keeps those items from the landfill! Using less paper products in your home can make a big impact on the environment as well as you budget, it is a win win!
Meatless Monday
Do you think you could cut meat out of your diet for one day a week? It doesn’t have to be Monday though that is a popular choice! Cutting even one day of meat from your diet means less stress on the planet as a whole. Meat farming consumes land resources, water, and tons of fossil fuels, another plus is that a plant based diet is more cost effective so you can save some money at the same time!
Take Shorter Showers
Set a timer and see how long it takes you to shower typically. Now, can you cut five minutes off of that time? It would save up to 25 gallons each time if so! Wow, that’s a big difference. In just one week you’d be saving hundreds of gallons of water.
Water is not an unlimited resource and our usage for things like hand washing, dish washing, and showering can be easily curtailed by smart simple choices…like shutting off the tap when you are brushing your teeth, washing your hands, and cleaning dishes!
Turn Off The Lights
This goes for all appliances and devices that use electricity. Electricity is generated typically by fossil fuels being burned. Let’s make an effort to turn off unnecessary lights, unplug common appliances that aren’t being used, and making smart energy choices.
This will help lower your electricity bill too which is a great bonus for making a difference for Earth Day in Tucson!
