The benefits of a smaller apartment definitely outweigh the downsides. Less rent, less space to worry about, plus… there is a cozy feeling about that space. While one might think that decorating for a smaller space is easier, it may in fact be more difficult. Use The Space

When decorating a small apartment, try not to think of it as everything must have a purpose. Instead, separate the space into a purpose. Once space is separated, then attack each space one by one.

Dead Space

Don’t fall into the common pothole where you over pack one area because it makes sense. Try and find dead space and consider using that for spreading out the necessities and more.

Go Up Not Out

Often times people will try and stay within the space given for certain items. Instead, use shelving and go up instead of packing it all in.

Colorful

A small apartment is just that, small, so avoid dark colors to tighten the space. Dark colors are usually used to bring a cozy feeling but there is already a cozy feeling. Use light colors to cover the walls, and then use slightly darker colors in the furniture or decor to bring it into focus.

Furniture

Your furniture should serve multiple functions for your space. The first being that it doubles as two pieces of furniture use a couch that could unfold into a bed, or a storage unit that imitates seating. The second function should be to bring new shape into your apartment. Use curved furniture to add style.

Clutter

Clutter is the enemy of a small apartment. Be sure to clear clutter regularly and avoid over buying decor for your space. It is fine to have a few things here and there that serve no purpose, but overstocked shelving or table space will just make the apartment feel smaller.
